Senior Intergroup 2021
Highland Restricted October 2021
Highland Badminton Group welcomed players from across Highland to play in the Highland Restricted competition, held in the Black Isle leisure Centre on the 1st and 2nd of October. It was good everyone back playing after the long break in competition due to Covid. Many were saying it was great to hear the noise of the shuttle being hit, the screech of trainers and some even missed the smell of the hall.
The Men’s and Ladies Singles competition kicked off the event on Friday evening, setting a very high standard of play for the rest of the weekend.
The men were split into 4 groups of 3 or 4 players to play in round robins, the top two from each group went onto an elimination round to the finals. All games were best of 3 games to 21pts.
The final was fought out between Mark MacKay and Stewart Ferns, with Mark taking both games 21-17.
The ladies’ singles only had 4 competitors, so they played a round robin. Shona Mackay finished in top position, winning all her games (126pts-54) and young Sophie Barrie was runner up (108pts-73).
Saturday seen lots of games being played in levels and mixed doubles. It was great to see so many juniors taking part and playing some fantastic badminton with a great attitude.
Callum Craig and Alasdair Gordon were a newly formed team, who progressed right through to the men’s doubles final to meet Mark MacKay and John Durrand. Although the young lads put up a good battle the experienced duo of Mark and John was just too strong, John and Mark won in two straight games 21-12 and 21-5.
Shona MacKay was also continuing her winning form from Friday night, winning the ladies doubles with Carole Begg, in what was a marathon final against Suzanne Henderson and Joanne Wesley. Shona and Carole lost their first game 21-19, but soon rallied to take the second and third games 21-19 & 21-16.
The mixed doubles seen 17 couples take part, again it was Mr and Mrs Mackay that came out winners, winning the mixed final 21-11, 21-9 against Stewart Ferns and Sophie Barrie.
The Highland Badminton Group would like to thank everyone that took part in the competition and followed all the covid guidelines to keep everyone safe.
Thanks to all the volunteers that help run the event and kept the games on track, all day.
Thanks to Ando Sports who set up a pop up shop at the venue and ran the raffle which raised £70 for HBG funds.
