Voluntary group to serve the badminton community
Caithness Junior Badminton Club held a Highland Badminton Group Area Junior Restricted on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th September. Which saw 44 players from Orkney, Western Isles, Skye, Moray and Caithness all compete over the weekend in the East of Caithness Community Facility in Wick over 3 age groups under 13s, 15s and 17s.

Saw a round-robin format with all 5 boys playing each other. Liam Sinclair (number 1 seed), Wick coming out top only dropping 23 points over 8 sets. Runner-Up was Finlay Nicolson, Wick and in third place was Jamie Rathie, Thurso.

Was played over 2 groups with the top 2 in each group playing off in semi-finals and then a final. Topping group A was number 1 seed Josie Columbine, Black Isle and 2nd on the Group A was Chloe Leask, Orkney. Group B saw Dunnetโs Sophie Mackay (number 2 seed) top the group and Wickโs Emily Mackenzie taking 2nd place. Columbine then played Mackenzie in first semi-final with Columbine winning 21-4, 21-5. The second semi-final saw Mackay take on Leask with Mackay winning 21-8, 21-6. Making the final Columbine v Mackay with Columbine wining 21-14, 22-20.

As there was only two pairings it was a straight final between Finlay Nicolson & Liam Sinclair both Wick again Thurso Pairing Jamie Rathie and Pรกtraic OโPrey with the Wick pair taking the win 21-5, 21-6.

Format for this was round robin with all 4 pairs playing each other. Columbine and Mackay came out top not dripping a set. Runners-up were Wick pairing Sophie Sinclair and Emily Mackenzie. Then in 3rd we had Orkneyโs Chloe Leask and Dunnetโs DโArcey Taylor.

Round Robin format with all 3 pairings playing each other. Topping the table was L Sinclair & Mackay winning all their games only dropping 12 points over 4 sets. Runners-up were Rathie and Columbine and in 3rd we had cousins April Steven and Lewis Steven.

With 13 boys taking part it was a knock-out with consolation. The 2 semi-finals were Drew Murdoch (1 seed), Moray against Orkneyโs Murray Clark with Murdoch winning 21-5, 22-20. The second of the semi-finals was between Wick club mates Rory Nicolson and Angus Mackay with Nicolson taking the win 21-16, 21-19. Murdoch winning the final 21-9, 21-8.
The Consolation saw Wickโs Ruaridh Kean take on club mate Owen Malcom with Kean winning 21-19. The 2nd semi-final was between Number 2 seed Dhaill Mackay and Dunnet club mate Finlay Macdonald with Mackay winning 21-12. Mackay then won the consolation 21-11 against Kean.

Was played over 2 groups with the top 2 in each group playing off in semi-finals and then a final. Topping group A was number 1 seed Ashlyn Gunn, Wick and Runner-up in group A was Erna Thain, Wick. Group B was topped by number 2 seed Isla Fraser from Stornoway and runner-up was Wickโs Freya Mackay. The 1st Semi-final saw Gunn v Mackay with Gunn winning 21-12, 21-13. The second semi was Thain v Fraser with Fraser winning 21-6, 21-10, the final was then won by Fraser 21-13, 21-10.

Once again was played over 2 groups with the top 2 in each group playing off in semi-finals and then a final. Topping group A 1 seeds Murdoch and McDonald and 2nd in the group was Wick duo Ross Mackay and Ruaridh Kean. In group B Matthew Cook and Dhaill Mackay topped the group with Rory Nicolson & Angus Mackay 2nd. The semi-finals saw Macdonald & Murdoch play Nicolson & Mackay with Murdoch & Macdonald win 21-10, 21-11. The secondi semi saw Cook & Mackay win 21-10, 21-9 over Kean & Mackay. The final was a hard-fought battle between Murdoch & Macdonald and Cook & Mackay with each claiming a set each 21-18 with it all the play for the in third which saw Cook & Mackay clinch the win 21-14.

With just 3 pairs taking part this saw a round robin with each pair playing each other. Winning the round robin was Wickโs Ashlyn Gunn and Isla Fraser, Stornoway. Runners up were Wick duo Blayr Howden and Erna Thain. 3rd was Wickโs Rhea Bruce and Freya Mackay.

Once again was played over 2 groups with the top 2 in each group playing off in semi-finals and then a final. Topping group A was 1 seeds Murdoch & Fraser and followed by siblings Chloe & Kian Leask, Orkney. Group B was topped by Nicolson & Gunn following by Mackay & Thain. Murdoch & Fraser played Mackay & Thain winning 21-11, 21-7. Nicolson & Gunn played the Leask siblings with the number 2 seeds Nicolson & Gunn winning 21-19, 15-21, 21-16. The final was then won by the 1 seeds Murdoch & Fraser 21-11, 21-19. Those who got third in the pools played off for consolation winner Wicksโ Blayr Howden & Calum Aitken won 21-11, 21-12 against Wickโs Owen Malcolm & Rhea Bruce.

Group B saw Alexander Mackay, Wick top the group with Lewis Malcolm, Wick second. Mackenzie played Malcolm with Macknezie winning 21-12, 21-6. Du played Mackay with Du winning 21-13, 21-11. Mackenzie came out top in the final winning 21-11, 21-16.

Was played in a round robin style with Chloe Mackenzie, Dunnet (number 1 seed) topping the group. Ava Cook, Thurso came runner up and then Chloe Begg, Wick third.

With just 3 pairs taking part this saw a round robin with each pair playing each other. Winning was the Mackenzie duo, Skyeโs Calum Mackenzie and Wickโs Brody Mackenzie. Runners up were Wick duo Ronin Kean & Qida Du and in third was Wick pair Alexander Mackay & Lewis Malcolm.

This was played over a round robin with 5 pairs all playing each other. Topping the table and lifting the title was Skyeโs Calum Mackenzie and Dunnetโs Chloe Mackenzie only dropping 46 points over 8 sets. Runner-up position came down to the last game between Qida Du & Ava Cook and Alexander and Freya Mackay โ which went all way with Du & Cook winning the first set 21-18, Mackay & Mackay taking the second set 21-17 and all to play for in the third with Du & Cook just taking the win 21-19. So that meant Du & Cook got runners-up and Mackay & Mackay came 3rd.
