Under 17s and Under 13s
Open Championships 2024
On Sunday 11th February, saw Highland Badminton Group hold their Annual Under 13s and Under 17s Tournament, in Inverness Leisure Centre, with players from all over Scotland entered. A total of 45 players entered across both age groups.
With 3 Highland Area players securing the treble, in the under 13s Sophie Mackay from Caithness and in the Under 17s Caithness’s Chloe Mackenzie and mixed Partner Callum Mcwhirter, Elgin also securing the treble.
Under 13s
Boys singles was a knock-out with consolation. The semi-finals were between Aarav Sinha (number 1 seed) from Aberdeen saw of Aaditya Shah 21-12, 21-6. The second semi-final was between Aayush Nagdeve also Aberdeen against number 2 seed Kanishk Tata also Aberdeen with Kanishk coming out top 21-12, 21-17. The final was well fought by both boys then with number 1 seed winning 21-18, 21-17.
The Consolation Final was between Ethan Wilby from Dingwall against Liam Sinclair, Caithness. Liam winning 21-9.
Girls Singles followed the same format. The first semi-final saw Number 1 seed Sophie Mackay, Caithness play Inverness’s Luella Fernandes, Sophie winning 21-2, 21-5. The second semi-final was second seed Josie Columbine from the Black Isle v Myah Macleod from Caithness with Josie winning 21-16, 21-8. The final was well played by both girls with Sophie taking the win 21-15, 21-19. The Consolation was between Loch Carron’s Maura Mackenzie and Caithness’ Sophie Sinclair with Maura winning 21-16.
The level Doubles in the under 13s was played in round robin format. With some great games in both the girls’ and boys’ sections.
Boys Results
Winners – Aayush Nagdeve & Aarav Sinha both Aberdeen not losing a game
Runners-up – Atharv Sharma, West of Scotland Group and Liam Sinclair, Caithness winning 3 out of their 4 games.
Girls Results
Winners – Sophie Mackay & Myah Macleod both Caithness winning all their games
Runners-up – Sophie Sinclair & Lexie Mackenzie both Caithness winning 2 out of their 3 games.
Mixed Dobles saw us back to the knockout with consolation format. The semi-finals were Number 1 seeds Sophie Mackay & Liam Sinclair Both Caithness against Moray’s Finn Wishart and Rene Curtis with Sophie and Liam winning 21-4, 21-13. The second semi-final saw second seeds West of Scotland’s Atharv Sharma & Black Isle’s Josie Columbine take one Moray’s Jai Wilkes and Amie Roger, with Josie & Atharv securing their place in the final 21-10, 21-7. The final was a fair match between the 2 pairs. Sophie & Liam winning the first set 21-17 then losing the 2nd 14-21, making it a nail biting third set, had us all sitting on the edge of our seats but Sophie and Liam came out with the win 24-22. Securing the third win of the date for Sophie! The consolation final was between Inverness’s Magnus Henderson & Lella Fernandes and Black Isles Conor Gallacher & Madeleine Weir with Conor and Madeleine winning 21-15.
Under 17s
Boys Singles
The singles followed the same format as the under 13s, the first semi-final saw Elgin’s Callum Mcwhirter take on Glasgow’s Freddie Harris with Callum wining 21-6, 21-9. The second seminal final saw Skye’s Calum Mackenzie take on Aberdeen’s Aditya Nagdeve in a nailing biting 3 setter with Calum securing his place in the final 21-18, 19-21, 21-18. The all-Highland final saw Callum Mcwhirter take the win 21-9, 21-3. The consolation final was also an all-Highland Final between Adam Ringstead from Benbecula and William Sendall from the Black Isle with William winning 21-14.
Girls Single followed the same format. The first semi-final was between number 1 seed Thenoo Amnamalai from Glasgow and Ava Cook from Caithness with Thenoo winning 21-12, 21-6. The second semi-final was between number 2 seed Chloe Mackenzie, Caithness and Chloe Begg also Caithness, with Mackenzie taking the win 21-2, 21-0. The final was a good performance of play with Chloe taking the win 21-14, 17-21, 21-2. The consolation final was between Moray’s Sophie Howard and Kaiya Wilkes with Sophie winning 21-6.
Level Doubles
The boys’ doubles played a round robin with Callum Mcwhirter Elgin and William Sendall from the Black Isle not dropping a set winning all 4 games with easy, securing them the doubles win. The runners up were Aberdeen’s Aditya Nagdeve and Aayush Sinha who won 3 out of their 4 matches, with tight contested one with Skye’s Calum Mackenzie and Adam Ringstead, Benbecula 18-21, 21-18, 30-29.
Girls’ doubles saw a straight final between Chloe Mackenzie & Ava Cook, both Caithness against Caithness’ Chloe Begg and Moray’s Kaiya Wilkes. Chloe & Ava taking the win 21-4, 21-9.
Mixed Doubles saw a round robin format with number one seeds Chloe Mackenzie and Callum Mcwhirter winning all games convincingly with only dropping 14 points over the 6 sets played, they were both on fire and both securing their treble win of the day!
Runners-up were Ava Cook and William Sendall winning 2 of 3 matches.
