Voluntary group to serve the badminton community
Some great first and second round games, leading to the quarter-finals. First of them was Thomas Calder (1) playing Finn Callister, Thomas winning 21-13, 21-8 securing his place in the semi-final. The 2nd Quarter final was Lewis Smith (3) v Benjamin Fragell with Lewis winning 21-8, 19-21, 21-8 securing his place against Thomas in the Semi-finals. The third quarter-final saw Thomas Fragell take on Erlend Ballantine (4), with Thomas winning 21-16, 21-14 confirming his place in the semi-finals. The last of the quarter-finals was Fraser Banks v Daniel Harris (2) with Daniel winning 21-14, 21-18 placing him in the semi-finals. The semi-finals were well played between Thomas Calder and Lewis Smith with Thomas winning 21-15, 21-14 and the 2 nd semi-final between Thomas Fragell and Daniel Harris saw Daniel
win 21-11, 21-11 ensuring his place in the final. The final was a well fought battle between the top seeds – Daniel winning the first set 21-16, Thomas Calder taking the second set 21-17 and then the third being won by Daniel 21-6. Consolation Final was between Callum Craig and Alfie Sweeney with Callum winning 21-17.
The girls’ singles saw 3 first rounds games be played well, leading to the quarter finals. Where Shannon Leslie (1) took on Chloe Mackenzie with Shannon winning 21-14, 21-13. The second quarter final was Emma Sendall v Shona Brown with Shona securing her semi-final spot 18-21, 21-18, 21-16. The third quarter-final was Gemma Foulis against Ella Haime with Ella winning 21-13, 21-19 ensuring she made
the semi-finals. The fourth quarter final was a bye for Jody Groundwater due to the number two seed having to withdraw due to injury. The semi-finals were well played by all four girls. Shannon just edged ahead winning a 3 setter 21-17, 20-22, 21-14 over Shona ensuring she made the finals. Ella played Jody and won 21-16, 21-18 to confirm her place in the final. The final was then won by Ella 21-13, 21-14. Consolation final was between Chloe Mackenzie and Hailey Ho with Hailey taking the win 21-12.
Next up were the level doubles, played on the same format as the singles. Andrew Flockhart & Daniel Harris (1) took on Erlend Ballantine & Sam Groundwater with Andrew & Daniel winning 21-15, 21-13 securing their place in the final. The second Semi was between the Fragell brother’s Thomas and Benjamim and number 2 seeds Fraser Banks & Lewis Smith. With Lewis & Fraser taking the win 21-14, 21-8 leading them to the final. Andrew & Daniel fought well and won 21-11, 21-15. Consolation final was between Finn Callister & Alfie Sweeny and Callum Craig & Callum Mcwhirter with the Callum’s taking the win 21-17.
The girl’s doubles were the same format. The first of the two semi-finals, was an epic match between Orkney’s Gemma Foulis & Shannon Leslie (1) and Orkney’s Jody Groundwater & Caithness’ Chloe Mackenzie, Chloe & Jody took the first set 21-15, the 2nd and 3rd sets were hard fought by both pairs level pegging the whole way through, with Shannon & Gemma edging the win 23-21, 23-21. The 2nd semi-final was between Ella Haime & Hailey Ho (2) and Iona Aitken & Lannan Campbell with Hailey and Ella confirming their place in the final 21-19, 21-13. The top seeds Gemma and Shannon then won the final 21-10, 18-21, 21-12. Consolation Final was between Chloe Begg & Shona Brown and Emma Sendall & Cara Strath with Cara and Emma taking the win 21-7.
The mixed competition was the final of the day, playing a knock-out with consolation. The first of the 2 semi-finals saw Andew Flockhart & Hailey Ho (1) be knocked out by Orkney’s Erlend Ballantine & Jody Groundwater with them winning 21-10, 21-19. The 2nd semi-final saw Fraser Banks & Iona Aitken take on Thomas Calder & Shannon Leslie (2) with Thomas & Shannon winning 21-15, 21-13. Making it to the All-Island final Orkney v Orkney/Shetland. It was a great match to watch seeing Orkney’s Shannon Leslie and Shetland’s Thomas Calder win 21-15, 21-11. Consolation Final was between Brother & Sister Duo Emma & William Sendall and Sam Groundwater & Chloe Mackenzie with Sam and Chloe taking the win 21-12.

Kicked off with the singles competitions, both boys and girls were a knock out with consolation competition. Lewis Malcolm had a marathon game to beat Rory Nicolson (2/3) 19-21 21-16 21-16 to secure his semi-final, where he then beat Dhaill Mackay (2/3) in another 3 setter 21-7 18-21 17-21 to put him into the final. Callum Richardson put out the no.1 seed Drew Murdoch 21-8 21-10 in the semi-final, to secure his place in the final which he then went onto win 21-15 21-8.
Ava Cook kicked of her winning streak of the day by beating the no.1 seed Ashlyn Gunn 21-10 21-12 in the semi-final and then beat the no.2 seed Natalie Macaulay 21-9 21-11 in the final.
The boy’s consolation was won by Rory Nicolson 16-14 against Alexander Mackay.
The girl’s consolation was won by Freya Mackay again 16-14 against Carla Edwards.
The levels competitions the boys played knockout with a consolation; the girls played a round robin with 4 pairings. The finalists of the singles Natalie and Ava paired up and were an unbeatable team winning all their games, dropping no games throughout the round robin. Ashlyn Gunn and Freya Swanson secured second place only dropping games to the champions 10-21, 18-21.
The boys’ doubles seen some marathon games; Alexander Mackay & Lewis Malcolm secured their place in the final by beating Drew Murdoch & Liam Sinclair19-21 21-19 21-18. Angus Mackay and Rory Nicolson got through to the final by winning 21-17 21-15 against Matthew Cook & Dhaill Mackay who had previously been involved in a 3 setter. After a few cookies the boys had a tremendous final, first
game going in the favour of Alexander and Lewis 26-24 but Angus and Rory dug deep and came back winning the next two games 21-12 21-19. Drew Murdoch and Liam Sinclair won the consolation 21-13, against Kian Munro and Callum Richardson.
Mixed Doubles was two groups of 4 with the top pair in each group playing in a final.
Group A – Callum Richardson & Natalie Macaulay kept a clean sheet, won all their matches in two games to top the group.
Group B – Matthew Cook and Ava Cook won all their matches only dropping one game in a three setter against Rory Nicolson and Ashlyn Gunn to get their place in the final (the third final of the day for Ava). Callum Richardson & Natalie Macaulay finished off the day winning 21-11, 21-16.
Congratulations to all the winners but a special mention to Callum Richardson (BS, MX), Natalie Macaulay (GD, MX) and Ava Cook (GS, GD) who all won 2 events.
